Mr. Smolin’s Trippy Take on the Wake

Mr. Smolin & Double Naught Spy Car of Waywords and MeansignsGrateful Web published an article about Mr. Smolin & Double Naught Spy Car’s contribution to Waywords and Meansigns. In the article composer Chris Rael responds the project: “Waywords and Meanings is one of the most meaty and brazen musical responses to a piece of literature I know of… It is no accident that Mr. Smolin sets the tone for this collective opus with his spoken-word-and-musical reaction to chapter one of the book… [Mr. Smolin & Double Naught Spy Car] make it feel like music, sometimes jazz, sometimes atonal theatrical backdrop, sometimes moody soundtrack. The music and the narration breathe dynamically with the relentlessly abstract text. This is a remarkable achievement.”

The article also includes high praise for Smolin’s chapter from bassist Miles Mosley (Kamasi Washington): “Smolin’s knack for space travel,” said Mosley, “seems better suited in this context than any he’s ever explored before.” Read the full article here.
